Some people travel a direct route to their career of choice; others like Tory Burch take a more scenic journey. But once she arrived, Burch quickly established herself as a designer to watch.
Born in 1967, Tory grew up in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The family home was an opulent 250-year-old Georgian on 30 acres. An athletic tomboy who enjoyed riding and playing tennis, Tory’s mom had to force her daughter to wear dresses.
Tory’s socialite mom, Reva Robinson, would have the family spend the summer in Europe. The trip always ended with a stop in Morocco so Reva could buy some tunics. Tory loved tunics and they became a staple of her wardrobe. She was also influenced by her parents’ fashion sense, saying her dad, “used to design every piece of his clothing and have incredible details, like lining his dinner jackets with Hermes scarves and piping them and all of his shirts with initials. He was one of my biggest, biggest inspirations.”
She attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a degree in Art History. During that time, Tory developed a signature style that a friend described as, “Half preppy and half jock—or prock.” Years later it would become known as “Tory Wear.”
After graduating, Tory found employment in the fashion industry, working as a publicist for the Zoran, Ralph Lauren, and Vera Wang labels. While at Vera Wang, Tory met venture capitalist Chris Burch. After they married in 1996 and Tory became pregnant with twins, she stopped working to devote time to her family. But Tory admits she became restless and decided to pursue her interest in fashion design by opening her own boutique, which was mostly financed by her husband’s $2 million investment.
Tory spent eight months putting her first collection together and she relied on her family’s society connections and the relationships and friendships from her days doing publicity to promote the store’s opening. By the end of the first day, most of Tory’s inventory has been sold. But the designer’s biggest break came through Oprah Winfrey, who invited Tory on her show after receiving one of her tunics. The day after the episode aired, Burch’s web site had eight million visitors.
Burch believes the secret of her success is that she offers designer clothes at un-designer prices. “I believed there was a void to be met in the market that was classic American sportswear that was chic and simple and also well-priced.”
Most of Burch’s collections are under $500 and in addition to at her signature boutiques her clothes, including designer swimwear, shoes, and accessories, can be found at Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Sachs Fifth Avenue and Scoop.
